Employers – General Information

The government’s Draft Apprenticeship Bill (July 2008) is an ambitious 10-year plan for Apprenticeship growth, with 1 in 5 young people starting an Apprenticeship and a similarly ambitious increase in the number of Adult Apprenticeships.

Training on the Apprenticeships programme for 16 to 18 years olds is a priority and fully-funded by Government.  Training for Apprenticeships for 19 to 24 year olds is part funded, with employers expected to make a contribution.  Funding for apprentices aged 25 is very limited and employers are expected to make a part or full contribution.

ITEC North East’s Apprenticeships are a great way to improve the productivity, loyalty and quality of your staff through on-the-job training and structured learning. Designed by employers for employers, an Apprenticeship is a work-based learning programme that allows you to train both new and existing staff.
  • 'AGE 16 and 17' is a grant aimed to support employers offering new and additional places in support of young people until the end of March 2010.

  • 5,000 grants will be available for employers who are able to offer a job opportunity to a young person.

  • Small and medium sized businesses not normally in a position to recruit an apprentice can apply for the £2,500 grant which is in addition to the costs of training which are already met by the National Apprenticeship Service.
