Members of The Gateshead Collective, a partnership of work-based learning companies, actively promoting Appenticeships, held an awareness event at The MetroCentre and ITEC’s stand was enthusiastically manned by ‘The A Team’.  the full day event generated interest from local 16 - 18 year olds who had received mail shots promoting the event and the huge range of career opportunities on show.  Some visitors to The MetroCentre for a spot of retail therapy, gained some careers advice as an unexpected bonus!!!

Apprentice wages

With effect from 1st October 2011 Apprenticeship employers must make sure all their apprentices are being paid at least £2.60 per hour for all the time they are on their Apprenticeships. This includes time working plus the time spent training both on and off the job (such as time at college).
The change will apply to all new and existing apprentices aged 16 to 18 and those aged 19 or over in the first year of their Apprenticeship.

Apprentices aged 19 or over who have already spent a year on their Apprenticeship must be paid at least the full National Minimum Wage rate appropriate to their age. However, recent research found that apprentices earn an average of £170 net pay per week.

The new rates will be: £6.08 per hour for low paid workers aged 21 and over - £4.98 per hour for 18 - 20 year olds - £3.68 per hour for 16 - 17 year olds.
